Photobucket

Post by cdco2 » Mon Jul 10, 2017 10:16 pm

All, dont know who else uses photobucket to host their pics but as of yesterday they have changed their policies. From now on to allow third party access to your pictures you need to have a paid account. At 30 quid a month ! So apologies all the pics ive posted over the years are no longer acessible . Any thoughts on where to use next ?

It seems to be the way these companies operate, offer a good service free, hook people in and then when they are reliant on it slap a fee on it, good business but totally crap for the user.

All,
I'm going to investigate two things
1. A script that may automate the retrieval of all the links on the forum that are currently in Photobucket
2. A better way of hosting (on our server) our own images for the forum.

I'm busy at present (buying a business), so it may take a while ...

Cheers Neil, for looking into this, and everything else you do around the place :fantastic:

Whats this business you're looking at then ? Just the area not the actual one - just interested really :)

I'm buying a woodworking/woodturning business. The guy currently imports olive wood from Italy and sells planks and turning blanks. The unit has a mezzanine floor which has 9 small lathes on and is used for woodturning tuition He also makes serving boards and bowls for the olive wood, too. I want to do similar, but branch out and make some other stuff, too. Bespoke joinery, jewellery boxes etc.
At the moment it's more of a hobby, just trying to make enough to pay the rent, but sometime in the future it will be my main job.

Not only that when you do a Google image search half of them have gone because of this, Flickr seems to be the way forward.

Best of luck Nelly, Hope you stick with it...

Well, I've run a couple of scripts in the background (details here if anyone's interested https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... 1&start=15)

This has put all the linked images into our database. I've then run another script (phpBB extension) that should re-link the post to the relocated image.

Please could someone who used photobucket check on their post(s) and see if it has worked? There were hundreds of linked images, so it's possible that not all of them have worked, but i hope most have.

EDIT: The script has been running for about half an hour now, cataloguing all the photos into the database, so it may be a short while before all the links have been sorted.

Don't think there is a gallery type function at the moment but you can attach pictures directly, when writing a post underneath the text box is an attachments tab you can use this to upload pictures and add them into you post. Only problem with this is the picture has to be the right size as I don't think it auto shrinks it etc so you normally get and image to large message, so normally takes a bit of messing about in paint first, so I still tend to link from my google drive thingy but that can be a pain the arse as well.
