Track day helmet..

Postby Dezrich » Sat Feb 06, 2010 11:01 pm

Treating myself to a new trackday helmet .
Any recomendations on what to buy, without taking out another mortgage.
Also are there any shops in the Preston area with a good selection to try on ,don"t want to buy off tinternet ,just in case it"s the wrong size.
Cheers. :)

Norlog discount, are you sure?

In any event, I'd be totally gobsmacked if anyone can get a 20% discount at DT ;)

Dez,

don't bother with an open face jobbie - they get fussy if you have windows open, and point blank refuse if you have the roof off. Full face ensures enthusiastic marshalls can't keep you in the paddock all day. =)

get the helmet that fits you. So my advice is get down to demon tweaks - it's a bit of a drive but at least you can try different brands on for size when you get there. I went down with one in mind and bought a completely different model just because of the way it fitted my head. I got a discount as well although I did buy some track shoes as the same time. Can't remember who through but they usually knock at least 10-15% of if you haggle and drop some car club names at the till. LOT/SELOC?

advice for safety standards, read down the FAQ want to get something that is going to be accepted in the future. http://www.lotus-on-track.com/faq.html

Oh yeah and go full face so you can drive roof off. I prefer it now I'm used to it.

Have you tried Road and Track on the White Lund in Morecambe Dez?

Nice people and very helpfull. You might pay a couple of quid more but as you say, the fit has to be right and different helmets vary in their sizes.

I shall get off the computer now and get on with the bathroom :P

Can't say I've experienced that problem, last trackday at Anglesey with BAT was fine with open face and roof off.

I've never seen anything in disclaimers or rules/regs anywhere about it either. Maybe it's buried in the small print somewhere. I don't like reading small print... ;)

Dave,

I've seen it happen at Croft - admittably the clipboard goes to the head a little at times near Darlington, I was once ejected from underneath the GT3 on the dummy grid for being a spectator - I had spanners in my hand, and was doing the anti roll bars at the time. I was extrapolating the hitlerism of Croft to other venues, it may be the exception rather than the rule!

Graham,

Admittedly not been much further than Anglesey because it's been convenient and fitted with dates I've had available so same as you - extrapolating!

Anyone think it would be worth me looking into getting a helmet? For any trackdays that I may find and people offer a pax round track? Save the hassle of trying to borrow one or rent one for£20 a day?
